PB & Yay! Where to Bring Fido on National Peanut Butter Lover's Day

Posted by Jessica Roberts

Calling all peanut butter lovers on two legs and four! March 1 is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day, and the start of an entire month dedicated to the appreciation of the peanut. Whether you’re team crunchy or team creamy, if you adore this sweet and salty treat you’re in good company. According to the Texas Peanuts Board, Americans eat nearly 700 million pounds of this spreadable goodness every year -- that’s enough to coat the floor of the Grand Canyon! Pups who love peanut butter for dogs will be thrilled to learn we’ve scooped up seven pet-friendly spots where they can get their PB fix on this doggone delicious national holiday.

Where better to celebrate National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day than at a pet-friendly shop dedicated entirely to America’s favorite legume? Cape May Peanut Butter Company is a gourmet store filled with sweet and savory treats, including nine flavors of nut butter like Honey Roasted, Butterscotch and Choc Choc. PB buffs can enjoy a Hot Stuff sandwich with peanut butter and pepper jam, and wash it down with a serving of peanut butter hot chocolate. Pooches get healthy house-made peanut butter dog treats to enjoy in the pet-friendly courtyard.

Cape May is one of the most walkable vacation destinations along the Jersey Shore. Once you and your pup have had your fill of peanut butter delicacies (and purchased some to go), take a stroll to your room at Boarding House Cape May.

Shake Shack

While Shake Shack may have started as a modest hot dog cart in Manhattan, you can now find locations across the country. The fast-casual restaurant chain prides itself on using top-quality ingredients to create the most delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard and shakes. But the best part of Shake Shack is its special love of four-legged friends. Its dog menu includes the famous Pooch-ini®, a decadent delicacy of ShackBurger dog biscuits (made special in NYC’s Bocce’s Bakery) with peanut butter sauce and vanilla custard.

If you find yourself tempted to taste Fido’s sweet treat yourself, order up a Peanut Butter Palace Concrete instead. This blend of vanilla frozen custard, peanut butter sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate chunks and salted peanuts is a fine way to celebrate this day.

J.P. Licks

For nearly three decades, J.P. Licks has been dishing up delicious ice creams and froyo in and around Boston. Get your furry fan a serving of Cow Paws, the peanut butter and honey sorbet made just for dogs! For the humans in your “pawty,” grab a double scoop of Banana Peanut Butter Ripple and Peanut Butter Cookies ‘n’ Cream ice cream, or go all out with a Peanut Butter Cup Sundae treat.

All J.P. Licks ice cream is handmade at the original Jamaica Plain flagship store. Extend your stay in the JP neighborhood, and cozy up with your nutter-lovin’ mutt at the Residence Inn by Marriott Boston Downtown / South End.

At the Tin Shed Garden Cafe in Portland, pups are welcomed on the cozy covered patio with their own special menu. The Shed’s famous Fido Food is a home-cooked dish of sweet potatoes and chicken that dogs love, but be sure your pooch saves room for a serving of the Doggy Dessert: peanut butter banana ice cream with yogurt and a dog biscuit. For humans, there’s the Tim Curry, a hearty combination of roasted sweet potato, seasonal greens, veggies and tofu in a yellow curry sauce topped with avocado, raisins, and peanuts.

A few blocks from the Tin Shed is a bright and beautiful vacation rental, the Sunshine Cabin. This one-bedroom Airbnb rental welcomes pets of any size for no additional fee.

The Sneaky Beagle

The Sneaky Beagle in Myrtle Beach is a little weird, a lot of fun, and always happy to serve pups on the patio. The special menu just for pooches is full of goodies from local bakers at Crabby Dog Eats and includes a Peanut Butter Pupcake and Coco Peanut Butter Balls, made with coconut oil, oats, shredded coconut and, you got it, peanut butter for dogs. Humans can wash down their chow with a regional beer like the Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout from Catawba Brewing or Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter from River Rat Brewery.

Until Labor Day, leashed dogs are allowed on Myrtle Beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Stay beachside at the Ocean Park Resort, which is also home to the swank Furology Paw Spa & Retreat.

The Howe Daily Kitchen & Bar

Minneapolis, MN

March might seem a little chilly for outdoor seating in Minneapolis, but not at The Howe Daily Kitchen & Bar. Its pet-friendly patio stays heated and open year-round. During Yappy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m., you can save $1 off Doggy Menu items like the frozen smoked beef marrow bone, turkey meatloaf, salmon cakes or the pièce de résistance, a peanut butter-banana non-dairy ice cream. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacks, as well as cocktails and craft beer, for human customers.

There’s plenty to do in dog-friendly Minneapolis. Make the most of your visit with a stay at Aloft Minneapolis.
