Entry Requirements

Complete the following entry requirements to travel to Burundi with your pet:
  • Burundi is a high risk country for rabies. Before receiving an import permit, travelers must obtain 2 pictures of their pet's front teeth, a CDC Rabies Vaccination and Microchip Record (attached), a serologic titer from an approved laboratory and a passport photo of the owner. Once these items are obtained, apply for a permit for your pet to return to the U.S. at this link. For further guidance on returning to the U.S. with your pet from a high risk country, contact the CDC directly at cdcanimalimports@cdc.gov
  • Pets require a veterinary health certificate issued at the point of origin and an import permit. On arrival veterinary inspection will take place. Be sure the health certificate includes: country of origin, names and address of owner, species, sex of animal, that animal is free from ticks and has not been exposed to contagious diseases.
  • The health certificate must state whether pets have been vaccinated against rabies over one month but less than 12 months before departure and what type of vaccine was used. This certificate must be issued less than 15 days before departure.
