Large, mostly empty field
Glastonbury Dog ParkTye large dog park is big, with wood shavings substrate. Mostly empty field with benches and chairs. At 7am, I was all alone. no other dogs
Nice field
Cochran Hill Dog RunThere are 3 separate runs for the dogs. while you do need a fob to get in, at least five people came and went while I was there, and everyone was friendly and willing to let me in. It was a nice sized field, with a gazebo with benches in case you needed some shade. They refill tennis balls regularly for the dogs. There is a dog wash station, pools, and water bowls. Everyone was very friendly. It is part of a larger park so you can always go for a nice hike afterwards.
Great dog park
McFarland Dog ParkThis was a lovely Dog Park. Note that when you park your car there is a small dog park in front of you. Walk past it down the path to enter the large dog park where you can hike around the prairie setting while your dog runs around. They also have a heated indoor dog wash with shampoo in case your dog gets muddy. You do need your own towels to dry. This county has nine dog parks. Fabulous dog friendly location
Great Park
Canine Corners Dog Park at Olson ParkThis was a lovely dog park. But beware, so many of the dog parks in this area are private -- with locks on the gates! I was lucky here -- the gate was broken! Otherwise, it's hit or miss whether people are there... and would be willing to let you in
Fabulous!
Dog Park at Capital Springs Recreation AreaA totally enclosed dog park! Easy to find, parking lot, unlocked gate (even though they ask for permits only). As the website says, “The park contains a 28 acre off-leash dog park, including a 3 acre small dog area, that includes... nearly a mile of hard surface walking trails through restored prairie.” Can you imagine an enclosed dog park with a mile long walking trail for the humans while the dogs run it out?. I really loved it here, even with the cold weather in the snow.
Great hiking to private beach!
Hatches Harbor TrailFabulous hike. About 2 miles in and out. We did not go to the lighthouse, but at the end of the path we walked over an extra hill and voila! Found a small private sandy cove! Had to keep the pup on a leash so she wouldn’t swim over to the protected area, so bring a long lead. So lovely. FYI re parking: this is a small unmarked lot between Herring Cove beach and Race Point Beach. As you head to Race Point, it’s a small road on the left with about 6 parking spots.
Nice but hot in summer
Tully Dog Park at Michael J. Tully ParkNice dog park, large enough with different areas of astroturf and pebbled substrate. No shade in the summer! And no hose, no pool. So just hot.
Great beach
East End Beach at Eastern Promenade ParkLots of dogs running off-leash & swimming (off-season between Labor and Memorial Days). Only warning: Not totally enclosed so your dog can get out.
Fabulous!
Quarry Run Dog ParkLike everyone else said, this place is lovely. Fenced in (although some areas of fencing are flimsy). A great place for me to take her for her first off-leash "hike." She ran, I got to walk, and she came when I called. Woo hoo!
Dog Friendly & Fabulous!
Hampton Inn Portland AirportWhen they say dog friendly, they mean it! Every staff member stopped to say hi to my pooch, and tell me about their own. Greeted with dog bones! 10 minute drive to Quarry Run Dog Park (great off-leash woodsy area). And...free breakfast and chocolate chip cookies at night for the humans :-)
Meh
Coachman InnGreat first floor access to grass and excellent water pressure in the shower. Beyond that, room was cramped. Free breakfast was minimal and didn’t start till 8am (too late for us because my husband had to leave for work by 7:30 AM). And on our second morning, they suddenly told me my dog was not allowed in the registration/breakfast area. So I am not allowed to leave the dog in the room, nor am I allowed to bring him in while I get breakfast. Will not go back. Next time, I will pay a little more money for a different location.
Great hikes
Alley Pond ParkGreat place to walk. Trails range from 1/2 mile to 2.5 miles., and are well marked. Very lovely -- a forest in the city. Signs say on leash only, but I always go off leash, and no one has complained. Put Alley Pond Adventure Course into GPS to find the right parking lot for trails.
Great Off Leash Hike
Hardscrabble Wilderness Area TrailI followed Kim’s review. Parking was right there. Lots of dog walkers with dogs off and on leash. Beautiful woodsy trail. I plan to go back!
Great Dog Beach
Playland BeachThis is a real dog beach! Dogs are running everywhere, and there is a double gate entrance to get on (just like a dog park). Only open to dogs off season, but what a great location to make available.
Great Walking Paths
Killens Pond State ParkLoved this park. Off-season so parking was free and the park was relatively empty.Trails ranged from 1 to 3 miles long. Hiked with my dog off leash without a problem. Paths are inconsistently marked, which can be frustrating but since this is not the wilderness, eventually you get back onto a path. I recommend starting at the Nature Center on the Pond Path which seems to be more clearly marked. Nature center is open for water and bathrooms, and there is a bathroom at the other end at the sports complex. Plenty of benches along the trails to stop and rest, So you can always bring lunch or a book. I ended up taking about 4 1/2 miles and every step of it was lovely.
Fabulous
Sleep Inn & Suites DoverGreat place to stay (with or without a dog!) No one batted an eye when I came in with my 70 pound lab. Beautiful, large room. Nice sitting area downstairs (where I hung out with my dog). Sufficient exercise room. And there is a perimeter of grass, including a small path into a woodsy area (really short, but still nice for walking the dog). And there is free breakfast. All for ~$65/night. I will seek out other Sleep Inn & Suites when I travel again.t
Great Paved Walking Path
Horn PondLovely local pond with a 2 mile paved path, with possibilities to extend the walk. Easy, level path. Dog must be leashed (I always prefer to let my boy off leash, but this is too public a path). There are also dirt trails that segue off, but I did not explore them today.
Fabulous Dog Friendly Hotel
Red Roof Inn PLUS+ Boston - Woburn/ BurlingtonCannot believe how nice this hotel is — especially because it is so relatively inexpensive! Staff likes dogs! No additional fee for dog / no size restrictions. Rooms are spacious. Enough lawn to walk dog (beware of rabbits!). Complimentary breakfast. Many restaurant choices within walking distance. 1/2 hour drive to Boston. Large swimming pool (for humans, not dogs.). I will check out Red Roof Inns for future travel.
Clean / No Frills
Motel 6 Putnam CTGreat value if all you want is a clean room, firm comfortable bed and good shower. $15 surcharge for dog. Sparse free breakfast. A perk was the ability to walk out of our room and have a grassy lawn out back for dog to run/go potty. Upon arrival, woman at desk immediately advised/ threatened that we could not leave dog in room alone. But it was clean, comfortable and cheap.
Great Hiking
Natchaug State ForestThere are multiple paths. I followed the blue trail. My dog was off leash and had a great time!
Off Leash Dog Beach
Jennings BeachGreat place to run. Even on a dank day in November, we ran into other dogs.
Wow!!!
Lake Mohegan Open SpaceGreat place to hike with your dog. Dogs are allowed off leash on all trails. There’s a 1 mile path around the lake And a 2 1/2 mile loop. And it is just beautiful!
Beautiful, easy hike
Dover Stone ChurchLovely hike. There is a very short hike (over rocks) to get to a cave with a small waterfall that feeds a running stream. Then there are three paths for hikes that range from 1 - 1.5 miles. This was a fabulous hike through a forest, but you have to be able to walk up woodsy hills and over stone paths. We did the lower trail; saving the others for another day. And, most importantly, my dog loved it! I let him run through the stream by the cave, but kept him on leash for the hike due to fear of ticks.
fabulous, easy hike
Minnewaska State Park PreserveWalking around the lake was lovely. It was a smooth path to follow, and there were numerous places for Galaxy (my dog) to wade into the water (my profile photo is from this hike!) We then moved to the lower parking lot and visited Awosting Falls -- again, swam with the pooch by the waterfall! Beautiful. Easy to go back to the car for supplies, then back to the lake. Bring a picnic lunch, a lot of water and you're good to go.
