In 1891, Fredick L. Olmsted’s firm (renowned for Central Park and The Biltmore) designed Charlotte’s first suburb and one of the nation’s first mixed-use neighborhoods – truly a novel concept at the time. The backbone was the streetcar that allowed residents to travel within the neighborhood as well as downtown.
Edward Dilworth Latta built the streetcar lines and implemented Olmsted’s land design over twenty years and resulting in a complete community that would include a diverse collection of homes surrounding a beautiful green space. Some industry. Atherton Mill and many other factory buildings in what is now South End, were part of the Dilworth plan as well.
Dilworth as we know it was recognized for its importance in Charlotte's history and granted protection as a local historic district in 1983. In 1987, Dilworth was added to the National Registry of Historic Places. The neighborhood has 1,025 structures designated as historically significant.
With its unique character, vibrant atmosphere, and prime location, Dilworth stands out as a desirable destination for travelers seeking an exceptional experience. Book your stay in Dilworth today and unlock the charm and allure of this remarkable neighborhood.
