The local area offers some of the best river fishing in Ireland. The River Tar which is a tributary of the Suir runs through the village. Clogheen has an excellent bus service linking the village to Clonmel, Mitchelstown and Fermoy in County Cork. Plus, there are also a number of buses that run direct to and from Dublin city centre.
There are fabulous scenic mountain walks in the local area and excellent golf courses such as Cahir Park which is an 18-hole parkland golf course located on the banks of the river Suir. The nearest large towns of Cahir and Mitchelstown are approximately 14 and 20 kilometres away, respectively. Just 5 km away lies The Vee, located in Ireland’s Ancient East which is a very scenic driving route. Travel from Waterford to Tramore via the Vee Road, famous for its views but the lesser-known Vee Road could be considered one of Ireland’s best kept driving secrets.Things to See & Do in TipperaryJust 8 miles away is historic Cahir town, visit Cahir Castle, one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles. It stands proudly on a rocky island on the River Suir which served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler Family.
Another major attraction is the Swiss Cottage, an early 19th-century cottage orné located at Kilcommon near the town of Cahir. It is managed by the Office of Public Works and a very popular tourist attraction. There are also several heritage walks in the area, the nearby Galtee Mountains form the largest inland range in Ireland and are home to Glengarra Wood which is a popular walking area. The Knockmealdown Mountains stand south of the town, while to the southwest lie the Mitchelstown Caves.
The salmon weir, on the opposite side of the bridge from the castle, is a popular fishing location.
Another local and interesting town to visit is Cashel, known for the imposing Rock of Cashel. A medieval complex on a hilltop overlooking the town. This archaeological site includes a Gothic cathedral, a round tower and a 15th-century castle. Nearby, the museums at Cashel Folk Village explore such subjects as the Great Famine and the 1916 Easter Rising. This town hosts the Bru Boru Traditional Irish Festival held from June-August, with showcases the best of Irish music, traditional dance, songs and theatre.
Further afield lies the main cities of Waterford, Cork, Kilkenny and Limerick, approximately an hour away. And the scenic and very popular town of Killarney can be reached within 2 hours.
