In the sweltering heat of a 90 degree day, ground surfaces can reach the mid-high 100’s. A dog’s paw padding is tough, but not enough. Burned paws can be incredibly painful for your pup and can lead to blisters and cracking. Maryland’s humidity also plays a role in how uncomfortable your dog may feel in the heat. If the humidity is too high, dogs are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels very quickly. So it’s important to be mindful of your pup and avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Keep them hydrated too! St. Michaels retail businesses have lot’s of doggie water bowls outside their storefronts and restaurants provide water bowls on their patios. Remember, if it’s too hot for your own comfort, it’s too hot for your dog.❤️🐕
Muskrat Park is an easy shortcut for our many visitors to get back to their boats. The park connects to the docks that surround the harbor and it’s easy access to Foxy’s Harbor Grille🌴, as well as St. Michaels Crab and Steak House🦀. Local’s love those restaurants!
This proud momma snaps a few precious pics of her adorable pup by the Harbor, while relaxing on the bench. Fun fact for ya, 1 in 4 dachshunds are affected by some kind of back injury. Sad but true...It’s very important to pick a dachshund up properly by supporting its chest and bum so their spine is not stressed.
James L. Stewart was a constant fixture in St. Michaels life. I saw him everyday, whether he was on his way to work or just running to the store. I can still picture his smile and I can still hear his laugh. He made beautiful St. Michaels, MD his home for 17 years. He was involved in local theater, Fall into St. Michaels & Christmas in St. Michaels. He had incredible style and his distinct taste won over the hearts of many. He helped decorate historic properties for home tours during the holidays. I remember him managing at, Chesapeake Trading Company where he worked for many years. Sometimes he would fill-in and tend bar for local saloons, he liked the nightlife. He is remembered the most for his bartending skills at Ava‘s Pizzeria & Wine Bar. This is where he worked until his passing. James passed away in August of 2010, at his home from diabetes complications. When you’re planning your visit to St. Michaels bring your zest for life, shop until you drop, plan to have a meal at Ava’s🍝 (*try the James Chicken Cutlet BLT) and schedule a sailing tour. ⛵️Visit Muskrat Park to see his bench and just come to have fun! James would want you to.❤️
Canine diets are high in protein, which means high levels of nitrogen. 👉A great tip for all dog lovers to use at home on their own lawns: pour water on the area immediately after your dog urinates to prevent the urine from scalding your green grass. The hose is your best option but filling a pitcher of tap water in preparation will work too.😉
Fun fact for ya, The Inn at Perry Cabin is recognizably famous from the 2005 movie🎥🍿The Wedding Crashers. Shooting took place April-June in 2004. St. Michaels was graced by the presence of Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Jane Seymour, Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams & Isla Fisher....just to name a few.😉 St. Michaels is Hollywood friendly for film executives...they can come & work undisturbed. I on the other hand couldn’t help myself from meeting Christopher Walken! He was shopping at the Acme Market (which has since closed), my co-worker & I made a mad dash across the street with a camera📸, pen🖊 and paper in my hand hoping to meet this iconic actor. We be-bopped up and down the grocery aisles just catching a glimpse of him leaving the store empty handed. Determined to catch up with him we ran down Talbot Street sidewalk and yelled “Can we have your autograph!?” We reached him in the parking lot next to Chesapeake Trading Co. slightly out of breath. That’s where his driver kindly agreed to take a picture of us with Chris by his car. The actor then took my paper and pen and scribble his name across it... simply, ‘Chris Walken’. Nice guy...thanks for entertaining us Chris!

Erik Freas was is a neighbor of mine growing up here in St. Michaels. Him and his wife Laura owned the house next to ours. On September 14, 2015 at 7:25PM Erik was the driver of a motorcycle who crashed not even a 1/8 of a mile from his home. No other vehicles were involved. According to police reports it appeared he was trying to avoid something in the roadway. Erik was only 50 years old...he succumbed to his injuries on September 15, 2015. Thank you for always being a good neighbor. Rest easy brother. Elwood Harrison owned a family masonry business named, Elwood Harrison and Son. He was responsible for building the majority of the brick homes here in St. Michaels, Maryland. Interesting enough, my grandfather was a friend of his brother, Hope Harrison. My companion & I lived in a rental by the Harbor for 12 years which Elwood Harrison had built back in the 1970’s. We now currently live in Elwood’s original home he built for himself and his family in 1947. His granddaughter and great grandchildren still live in the area today.
Muskrat Park visitors settle down at a picnic table in front of the Tarr House. This charming bed and breakfast was built in the early 1800’s. It’s a fantastic location! Short easy walks to shops and restaurants. Very quaint and clean.👍

David M. Smith was a charismatic, enthusiastic and intelligent man. He was the co-proprietor of Justine’s Ice Cream Parlor along with his partner Tom Quimby. David served on several boards but notably as town commissioner. He was instrumental in the design, fundraising efforts and construction of the gazebo at Muskrat Park. David was devoted to the arts and I had the personal pleasure of knowing him through his involvement in the St. Michaels High School musical production of ‘Annie’. David passed away in 2005 after final stage liver disease. David your spirit is missed...St. Michaels is more special because of your love and dedication. Thank you!☺️
This beautiful brick walking path through Muskrat Park connects the parking lot at Foxy’s Harbor Grille to Green Street. Then connects to Locust Street that intersects with Carpenter Street. That intersection is know as ‘Hell’s Crossing’. In the late 1700’s the town was described as a rowdy one. It was a port town with sailors and they would come to the Saloons for a little excitement.🍺Fights were common in the area of ‘Hell’s Crossing’ As sailors tried to make their way back home after leaving the saloons.👊💥🤪
“Better than all of the gold in the world, better than diamonds, better than pearls, better than any material thing...is the love of a dog and the joy that it brings.” -Laura Jaworski.
This home stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent to Muskrat Park. It was built around 1790 by Thomas Harrison Jr. and is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. Many original features still exist in the home today!
The replica cannons at Muskrat Park were given by the National Park Service to replace the originals. The originals are believed to be at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, MD. The originals were confiscated by Federal troops from the arsenal in Easton, MD at the beginning of ‘the war of the states’. These replica cannons are fired on special occasions by the present day ‘St. Michaels Blue’ a volunteer group named after the town militia during the War of 1812. The cannons were dedicated in 1975.
There are two cannons that sit facing the water at Muskrat Park. They make awesome photo backdrops in pictures snapped by our many visitors that come to explore St. Michaels. These two specific cannons are replicas of the originals. Jacob Gibson played a mischievous prank on the town during the war of 1812 by sailing up San Domingo Creek (on the west waterfront side of town) flying a red flag. The local militia arrived because they believed St. Michaels was being attacked by the British. Gibson’s joke didn’t go over well with the town and as a peace offering he produced two cannons to the town as an apology. Those cannons were quickly used to defend the town on August 10, 1813 when the British attacked.
Fun fact for ya...in 1813 St. Michaels captured more than 40 British vessels trying to invade the town. Find out more... at the St. Michaels Museum located at St. Mary’s Square. Walking tours are offered on Saturdays at 10 AM May through October.
Weekdays are very relaxed at Muskrat Park. I am able to let her off the leash so she can enjoy her frisbee time. If foot traffic passes through the park she is very obedient and comes on my command. I slip her leash back on so that folks feel secure in their surroundings.
Beautiful electric blue bike 🚲 racks await your visit. The Rotary club of St. Michaels made the addition to Muskrat Park and other parks in the area in 2018.
