El Malpais National Monument

Visit the pet-friendly El Malpais National Monument in Grants, NM. El Malpais, also known as the Land of Frozen Fire, is surrounded by lava fields, sandstone cliffs and ancient trails that you and Fido can explore. You and your furry friend can see how volcanic forces shaped the landscape, supporting a rich cultural history and diversity of plant and animal life. Due to the rough basalt lava, pets are only permitted on the El Malpais Visitor Center Trail, Sandstone Bluffs Overlook Trail, and most of the El Calderon Area Trail.
