In response to Anna. Your post was full of sarcasm and guile. May I congratulate you on your patronising tone. One at least two occasions I have felt threatened by aggressive dogs out of control of their irresponsible owners. You discount the threat I felt and disregard the personal distress I experienced.
I am well aware that the majority of park users are responsible, and the communal spirit is evident.
On the occasions I experienced anti social behaviour I was shown no sympathy by other dog owners, but instead treated as having overreacted. Those who know me well, know that I am not prone to over reaction.
On many occasions I have had the opportunity to pat a friendly dog and chat to the owners. My post was aimed specifically at irresponsible dog owners and their pets (you are obviously not one of them) who caused me to feel threatened. Yes I threw a woollen beanie and had to shout loudly at the dogs to stop the attack. You act like you understand the situation. What right have you to belittle my experience. If I had been nipped at the heels, do you consider that acceptable? If you consider a dog bite or nip acceptable you should not own a dog.
I appreciate the good state of the park. I appreciate the interaction between families, children and well behaved animals.
I will however continue carrying mace when I walk in the park in the evenings on my way back from hospital, this is due to the 2 particularly aggressive animals that freq ident th park in the evenings

Thanks Anna - you make many good points. De Waal park is a wonderful place to go - vibrant with dogs and children.
I take my Amstaff and 2 year old son there every single day almost and have never, ever in all the time we've been going been 'attacked' or felt threatened by any of the dogs. The most that may have ever happened is that a dog jumped up at me, so happy to be patted and loved and part of all the fun. Unfortunately my Amstaff terrier does jump up at people and I've noticed (as he is so similar to the Pitbull) that many non-dog owners are rude to him, fearing for their lives maybe that he licks them to death…? However, I can honestly say that all the dog-owners in De waal park have always made him feel welcome and patted him and been kind to him even though he may have dirtied them a little.
Go to De Waal park if you're a true dog-owner who loves dogs and children and enjoy a stroll around one of the very few places in the whole of Cape Town that dogs are still allowed to be dogs and play as such.
