Rines Forest is a magnificent 272-acre woodland in the heart of Cumberland Foreside, ME. This pet-friendly trail allows your pup to tag along as you come across cascading waterfalls, popular trails and places of solitude. Dogs are allowed under owner voice, electronic, or whistle control, however please note hunting and snowmobiles are also permitted on select routes.

About 12 miles of trails, often steep and strenuous, lead through wooded areas and over rocky ledges up to the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline. Volunteers and experienced woodsmen work tirelessly to improve the trails but there will always be a slippery spot or a steep climb. Get a trail map at an Island shop before setting out with your leashed dog. Most of the Island is wild land, with woods and undergrowth so thick you can’t cut across from one trail to another without becoming lost. The trail map published by the Monhegan Associates, showing trails, their names, their numbers, and their difficulty, is reliable, cheap, and easily available. You can view it online but really should plan on purchasing one (for a nominal fee) to carry when you hike away from the Village. You’ll be charged boat fare for your dog and are expected to dispose of its waste as in a city.

Leashed dogs are allowed at one of the oldest and most popular of the trails in Portland, Back Cove Trail, which offers great views of the Portland skyline. Set along Portland’s iconic Baxter Blvd on Back Cove, this park has a 3-mile multi-use path, athletic field, horticultural gardens, fitness course, and wildlife viewing areas. The tree-lined stone dust and paved path boasts views of the skyline while hugging the edges of a tidal estuary basin. There are abundant opportunities for birding, biking, running and walking. The Back Cove trail was first visioned by James Phinney Baxter, mayor of Portland in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The Back Cove trail was completed in 1917 after a combined effort by many Portland residents.

Androscoggin River Bicycle Path in Brunswick, ME invites Fido to enjoy a leashed walk while taking in scenic views. This pet-friendly paved trail goes from the Cooks Corner area to Brunswick and is about 2.6-miles long. The road is plowed and sanded in the wintertime.
