Buddhist lama provides spiritual blessing for pets What is a revered Buddhist lama from Nepal doing at a classical Chinese garden in Vancouver? He is offering a blessing to the living things many people cherish most - their pets! Kyabgon Phakchock Rinpoche, the supreme head of the Taklung Kagyu Buddhist lineage, will conduct the first known pet blessing in Vancouver by a Buddhist lama at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden, Sat. Sept. 1, in the outer courtyard from 3 to 5 p.m. According to Buddhist thought, blessing animals can help reduce the hardships they may face in their lives, and lead to a positive rebirth. For the safety of all participants, dogs must be leashed and well-behaved and small animals must be in a carrier or otherwise contained. If the pet cannot attend the ceremony, owners can bring a photo for blessing. A portion of the suggested $20 donation (or pay as you can) will be used to help dogs-in-need in Kathmandu, Nepal.
