Description

Newton Fork Ranch has six enchanting log cabins in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The cabins are quiet and secluded, yet only 1/2 mile from Hill City's Main Street and centrally located to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, and all area attractions. Each cabin features a full kitchen with range, refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, cookware, dinnerware and utensils, as well as a gas fireplace, gas barbecue, old-fashioned clawfoot bathtub or custom-built rock-surround shower, towels, bedding, and a porch with breathtaking views. Five of the six cabins have lofts and will comfortably sleep up to four people. The sixth, which has a view of Harney Peak, is a two bedroom cabin that can sleep up to eight. The cabins are placed a short distance apart to afford peace and privacy, and there is a gate on the property that opens directly onto the 109-mile Mickelson Trail for hiking, biking, and walking with Fido.

Perfect Location and Dog Friendly Too!

We used Newton Fork Ranch as a home base for 7 nights of a 14 day road trip with our dog, Willow. During that time, we explored most of the pet friendly sites in western South Dakota. We could not have found a better place for us. The owner and property manager were both welcoming and helpful with suggestions. The cabin itself was well appointed and had everything we needed including a mid-week towel exchange. We stayed in the Meadow Song Cabin which sits at the back of the ranch backing up to a wooded area and facing a meadow in the center of the ranch. The scenery was lovely and We frequently had deer guests and one morning even saw a prairie dog as we enjoyed coffee on our deck.

The only item of note is that the stairs to the loft area where we slept are not for the faint of heart. We ultimately carried Willow up the stairs and blocked off the entry with her crate at night so she wouldn’t try to navigate them alone. It was an easy accommodation though and they have even installed a flashlight at the top of the stairs for coming down in the dark so it was totally workable. We would definitely return to Newton Fork Ranch and we’re certainly glad it served as the home base for our first trip to South Dakota.
