    Nice place

Only downside is that there were no dog bags provided by the hotel or the park across from it. This park is the old train stop to pick up sand and deliver to San Francisco and Portland. The tracks are removed - leaving a nice walking trail. You can hear the waves from the room too!

    Delightful

We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was lovely and exceptionally clean. While the hotel itself looks like it has been around awhile, the room was very well-maintained with updated furnishings/ decor, and amenities, like a fridge, microwave, and DirecTV. The staff were cheery and accommodating.

It’s located in a quiet neighborhood with good dog-walking potential but also an easy distance to the beaches, restaurants, and the attractions of Cannery Row. It’s a great option if you want to enjoy the touristy things in Monterey but prefer to have a respite from the hustle and bustle.

This was a great, pet-friendly option, as I had a symposium to attend at nearby Asilomar, which did not have pet-friendly accommodation. The walk to my conference couldn’t have been any shorter. I’m definitely putting it on my “would-stay-again” list.

    Nice Location

The room was an accessible room that worked for us. It was great to have composite floors rather than carpet as it worked better for our dog Max. The staff was pleasant and helpful.

    Happy Hikers

Less than half mile to the ocean walking paths, a quarter mile to nice fish restaurant, and a little more than a mile to downtown shops and cafes. Room was neat and clean, people were friendly, had a small refrigerator and microwave. It met all our needs. We loved it.

    Everything was great

The room was clean and spacious. The location is close to several good dog walking areas. The staff were friendly and efficient. And you can't beat the mid-week rates!

    Just great

Loved staying here. Needed a restful and quiet break from life and Deer Haven Inn was the perfect place for just that. Quaint, sweet room, and the walk to the beach through Asilomar was so pleasant. Oh, and our dog loved her stay too.

    Nice Location

Very quiet and clean. No specific area for dogs to relieve themselves, but plenty of areas nearby for scenic walks.

    Good stay

Deer Haven is an older motor inn and the exterior could really use some TLC. Our room was clean with a large window. The gas fireplace is a nice amenity and there was a fridge and microwave in the room.

Beware if you have a big dog

When I tried to check in with my Great Dane, I was asked how much my dog weighed. I said, 130 lbs. I was then shown a piece of paper (a piece of paper?) that said they only allow "medium sized" dogs. I couldn't find this information anywhere on their website, nor was it mentioned when I booked the room. Everything I saw said they were "dog friendly" period, the end. They did let us stay though. Other than the experience trying to check in with our big dog, the hotel was nice.

    Expensive

Expensive , I don’t mind paying but they need to update their pillows. It was quite expensive for what we got.

    Wonderful location

A quick walk to Asilomar State Park where the dogs had a blast chasing waves. The rooms were clean but not much extra space for crates. Unfortunately there is not a grassy area on the inn's property but there is open space across the street to take the dogs potty. It's not grassy either but my dogs seemed to prefer it. The pet fee is very reasonable and large dogs can stay. I have two ridgebacks and it's hard to find lodging for dogs their size.

    Lovely location, very quiet

I don't often go off the chain brands because of some bad experiences, but this one was NOT one of those situations. The Inn is as clean or cleaner than three-star brands. The property is quiet (I did hear some noise through the wall, but not enough to fuss about. More a matter of neighboring guest than the facility itself.) And the room was very comfortable and cute. As far as traveling with doggos, very very easy in and out, as I was able to back my car right up to my door. There isn't really a pet relief area on property but there are walking trails and parks all around, so I didn't find this problematic. Even for the 5 AM potty breaks. Would definitely stay here again!

    Great location

This was a perfectly nice, reasonably priced hotel in a wonderful location. As many have mentioned, it is only a short walk to a dog-friendly beach. Dogs must remain on leash at the beach. There is also a nice boardwalk through the dunes for leashes dogs to enjoy.

    Gem of a place

All your dog could want. Old style motor court boutique hotel in quiet Monterey neighborhood. Walking trail to beach just across the street. Great seafood restaurant on the way. We loved our stay at the Deer Heaven Inn.

    Great stay

Had a great time. Very dog friendly. On a very quite road with a big nature area across the street to take you dog to do her thing. The room was lovely with a nice fireplace. Highly recommend this place.

    Deer and mud

The location of this hotel is great, we saw lots of deer everyday. One morning, a family of deer started following me and my dog on our walk along the street. I couldn't tell if it was a curiosity or protective move, so we crossed the street and gained some distance. But fun to see them out! The hotel has lots of trails and sidewalks to walk the dogs, but be warned, there is a lot of mud and dirt from the area that will be on your dogs' feet. I suppose this is why they have tiled and laminated flooring for easy clean up. However, my dog is old and has some physical conditions like arthritis, and she wasn't able to keep her feet from sliding on the floor. So, we put down towels along the floor so she could have some traction. I would love it if the hotel had some floor mats or runners available for old dogs. The room was clean and comfortable, however the smell of Pinesol cleaner was so strong, that even after trying to air it out for hours, it never went away. Overall, we enjoyed the room (and the fireplace), and would return.

    Definitely not very dog friendly

I took pictures of the very small areas for your pets but unfortunately I can't load them. The largest one was 4 x 10 maybe. No grass, no doggy bags or a trash can. You could cross the street which was busy at times to use the Asilomar grounds but not lighted anywhere, no bags and no garbage can. There’s no welcome pack, dog bowl or treat for your pet either. It’s a nice 3 or 4 star hotel but only a one bone.

    Great Location + Super Clean

Perfect! This Inn is very clean and quaint. There are fireplaces in every room, which is a nice touch. We loved the crisp white cotton bedding. I rarely drink the coffee provided, but I'm glad I enjoyed it at Deer Haven... it was robust and tasty. Usually I find the coffee in these places to be very weak and flavorless.

Most importantly, our 70 lb Boxer dog, Sailor, loved the location. The room was nice and roomy which gave him plenty of space to stretch out after our very long drive. Our only complaint and the reason we didn't give "5 Bones", there is no designated pet area on the property. This would have been nice for Sailor's 2 am potty time. Walked behind the building only to find construction debris, trash and broken glass. That was definitely disappointing since the inn was perfect in every other way. That said, the neighborhood is fantastic and there are lots of places to walk.

The front desk staff, including housekeeping, were very friendly. It would be nice if they provided a list of pet-friendly restaurants in the area at check in, but not a big deal... there's BringFido for that!

    Great accommodations

Very nice inn! The room was very clean and has updated features and decor. Excellent location. Within a 5 minute walk to the beach which is off leash friendly. About a 10 minute drive to both Monterey and Carmel. The Pacific Grove restaurant scene is simple, but many options for outdoor dining with dogs. We have stayed at neighboring inns many times, but Deer Haven will be our go to in the future. My only suggestion would be to have a dog wash area to rinse off sand from the beach. Our dogs enjoyed their stay, too!

    Friendly staff, dog-friendly, nice spot

Good condition. Temporarily no breakfast, which wasn’t wholly unexpected. Great location for the state park. Friendly and helpful staff. Room and decent condition. The satellite box was unplugged but easy to fix and who wants to watch TV on vacation in such a beautiful area anyway! People and area was quiet. Would definitely return with or without the pup.

    Dog TOLERANT

My experience of Deer Haven was that They were dog tolerant for an additional fee. The woman seemed annoyed when I told her I had more than one dog.

There were no spaces for the dogs to potty. I walked to the neighborhood over to find some grass. I had my own poop bags, but there were no specific bins to dispose them in.

Really not worth the money. And I didn’t feel welcomed at all. This at the end of a cross country trip where all of the other hotels had been GREAT about my dogs.
