This photo was taken at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, CA.
Always take the scenic route.
Despite not being able to access the trails, you can still enjoy the rugged landscape formed largely by erosion from rain, snow, ice, and wind. Dogs are allowed on wash/dirt roads and on the short native plant trails around the visitors' center. There is a 0.6 mile (1.2 mile) round trip sidewalk through the desert from the visitors' center to the campground, which is gorgeous in early spring when everything is green and flowers are starting to bloom. Dogs are also allowed in the campground!
