Good choice

Quality Inn

The facilities were clean, even the dog potty area. They put us on the ground floor, which was convenient. Breakfast was okay. The only issue is that they deactivated our key while we were still loading the car (well before checkout time) but housekeeping let us in, so it worked out.

Good but not exceptional

La Quinta by Wyndham Albuquerque Journal Ctr NW

Everything was okay but other than allowing dogs, they didn't do anything to welcome them. I had to tell the desk that the container of baggies was empty. There was a grassy area but it was not well lit for nighttime use. We had requested a first floor room but wound up on the second - so the dogs got to experience riding in an elevator.

In case of fire, don’t worry!

The Lodge at Russell

This is an older establishment and wouldn’t get a lot of stars based on its modern amenities. But it was clean and cozy and very dog friendly. There was a large, maintained grassy field with picnic tables. The room was big enough and the mattress was firm. Once we covered it with our sheet, the dogs found it very comfortable. When a dryer in the laundry room billowed black smoke and the place was swarming with police and firefighters, they knocked on our door and told us to go to the lobby in another building. When we said we had the dogs, the response was “they’re family too” and allowed them in the lobby where breakfast was being served. Even with the power turned off for safety, the food was still warm and very tasty. There were many homestyle dishes that you wouldn’t find in a chain. (The fire was quickly extinguished and we got back into the room).

Memorable, not in a good way

Motel 6 Laramie WY

Trying not to faceplant while going down rickety outdoor steps when the dogs really, really had to go was such a challenge that we put belly bands on the boys to minimize the number of times we had to do it. The pet corner of the parking lot, which was full of weeds, had a baggie stand next to a totally overflowing bucket for dog poop. No wonder there was a lot of excrement around the property. But the worst part was that we realized after we were all unpacked, fed and ready for bed that the room just wasn’t warming up. The fan for the HVAC system was blowing unheated air - at a time of year when outdoors was below freezing. We turned off the fan, which was just making the room feel colder, and decided to make the best of it by going to bed wearing our street clothes and insisting that the dogs stay on the bed the entire night to add additional warmth. They are bed hogs and it was close to a sleepless night.
