great dog beach
Whitefish Dunes State ParkThe beginning portion of the beach is all for people, but if you hike a bit of the way, there is a dog friendly area. This is not as crowded, yet just as pretty! There are additional trails throughout the park to hike with your dog too so they can dry up after beach time. When we went, it was off-leash in this area, but some other reviews make it sound like this may only be on-leash now.
nice escape
Kenneth Hahn State Recreation AreaThis place is smack dab in the middle of the city, yet feels like you're walking out in nature. Really a great escape. Dogs are not allowed on the Baldwin steps, but that even has a separate entrance than the main park. Dogs can go with you to see the city views in the main park. Parking is free on week days, but daily rate on weekends.
nice store
Centinela Feed & Pet SuppliesThis store gives my dog plenty of treats (she's greedy), have a self-service dog wash, and parking in front. Great store to check out, even for treats and food. They have specials monthly for subscribers and webinars with additional discounts.
cute breakfast & coffee spot
Urth CaffeReally nice cafe for breakfast and coffees. It's a chain around LA, but this location has nearby street parking, garage parking, and an outdoor patio which is dog friendly. Dogs can't go inside, but it's really easy to have your dog on the patio while you order, and they bring everything out to you! Lines are generally kind of long, but the coffee drinks are worth waiting
beautiful but beware
Mishe Mokwa to Tri-Peaks and Sandstone PeakThis trail is really beautiful with change in scenery from something off an inhabited version of Mars to wide seascapes. Breathtaking. However, it has challenging portions that some people (and some dogs) may not be able to conquer. Also, don't bring a dog that does not reliably hike right beside with a handsfree leash the whole time. There was a ranger giving out leash tickets when we went, even though the terrain demands you sometimes aren't holding the leash, for your own safety.
best dog park ever
Prairie Moraine County ParkThis is actually the best dog park ever. You just need a Dane county dog park license (<$40 annually). It's full of wilderness and trails that change spectacularly with the seasons. Feels like you're out hiking but off-leash. Also, most owners are respectful and dogs behaved. Easy to get away from anyone you want to also, with almost 80 acres of land!! I and friends have since moved away and miss Prairie Moraine every single day
best trail in LA
Westridge TrailheadLiving in west LA with a semi active dog can be challenging. My dog detests running on a leash, but could hike off-leash for hours. Westridge is a godsend - off leash and goes all the way from Brentwood to the Valley! Just be warned, it's LA hiking and gets hot quickly in the summer due to lack of trees/shade.
