Truly dog friendly

Inn at Morro Bay

Stayed here 3 nights with our pup. Lots of folks brought theirs as well, so plenty of opportunity for canine socialization. Huge jar of dog treats next to the registration desk. Lots of outdoor dining (well-heated) so those with pups can enjoy a nice meal overlooking the bay.

As a city dog, mine was a little confused by the flock of wild turkeys wandering about the property. She also heard a lot of barking from the “sea dogs” (seals) who had made a home on a little islet in the harbor. They must have been barking in a language she didn’t understand because usually she’ll bark a greeting back to other dogs and this time she just cocked her head and looked puzzled.

We were given directions to a nearby dog-friendly beach which my pup just loved, a nearby off leash dog park which was super well kept up, and told which restaurants and wineries in the area were most dog friendly.

Lovely hotel

Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country

Stayed two nights. My Bernedoodle was treated like the princess she believes herself to be. Lots of grassy area and little trails on premises. Dog relief bags offered.

No special treatment

Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel

The staff was nice and the room was fine, but they seemed surprised to see I had a dog with me although I HAD booked through BringFido. The only thing they gave me pertaining to my dog was an acknowledgment of responsibility form to sign and a door tag to warn housekeeping that my dog was in the room. Nothing that would indicate they were dog friendly.

Lovely staff

Callahan's Mountain Lodge

This property has a beautiful location, though not walkable to anything else, which is a benefit if you’re looking to “get away.” Staff could not have been friendlier at every level and they clearly welcome dogs and their humans. Our room was spacious with a lovely view. All that being said, they are sorely understaffed. There’s quite a bit of deferred maintenance (although the exterior grounds are well cared for) resulting in the place looking quite dated, dark and shabby. Worn mattress, chairs with buttons hanging from upholstery. The food is not good, although service was pleasant. Breakfast, while included, is self serve with nothing fresh. Again, it seems that this could be a staffing issue.

Basic motel

Monterey Peninsula Inn

The motel is quite basic. The proprietress was pleasant. She was the only staff with whom we interacted. There is a hot tub and fire pits which are lovely amenities, although we didn’t use them. “Downtown” dining is about a mile away with a fairly steep hill in between and no sidewalks, so drive to dinner or be VERY careful, especially if it’s dark.

While our room had been tidied before our arrival, there was a large dried grape vine (the thing left when you take off all the grapes) by the bed and a grape under a nearby chair. Since this is a pet-designated room, that’s concerning since dogs should never eat grapes. Coffee maker had the prior occupant’s coffee pod/filter still in it and they provided just one cup’s worth of regular coffee and one cup’s worth of decaf (so if a couple needs their morning Joe, one of you would need to look elsewhere). My husband thought there was coffee in the lobby, but the lobby wasn’t yet opened when we departed at 8am.

Lovely stay

Shasta Inn

Quick stop here with lovely accommodations for dogs. Pleasant staff as well. Restaurant dining nearby very limited with dog in tow but the hotel has outdoor seating that was shaded (it was still well into the 90’s at dinner time!).

Could not have been nicer

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

Beautiful hotel that treated my dog like a pampered guest. All staff were wonderful. Room was large and beautiful with a great view. Check-in included a sign for our door alerting staff to the presence of a dog (smart!) and treats, including the edible kind, a tennis ball and doggie hygiene bag.

Dog and her humans had a great time

Marina Beach Motel

Turns out we arrived in Santa Barbara the weekend of a dog competition. LOTS of dogs in town (in addition to the locals). About half the guest rooms at the motel included at least one canine guest. Every one of them was treated like royalty and, of course, a motel full of « dog people » led to lots of pleasant breakfast conversations. Situated a block from the beach, it’s also just a 10 minute drive to Hendry’s off-leash beach, great for morning frolicking. The rooms are cozy but the A/C worked spectacularly, given there was a heat wave and even Santa Barbara got to over 90 degrees during the day.
