Walk, run, swim with your dog

This place is heavenly… so peaceful and pretty. our dog loves to walk off-leash and to swim. This park has several sweet little swimming areas for people and dogs. It has several paths and trails; even has several stations with poop bags and poop bag drop-off. We love it here!

    Great location

This was exactly what we needed during our trip to Maine. The dogs loved being able to run off leash. A heads up though, not every owner that frequents this place is a respectful dog owner. If your dog is off leash, they must be under voice control. Those that aren’t could ruin it for the rest. It’s not a dog park, so don’t treat it as such, and think that every dog wants to say hi to your dog.

    100/10

We had the absolute BEST time here with our dogs today!!! They played in the lake and we hiked a total of about 6 miles. The only downside at all is that there are no restrooms or port a John's but that is an extremely minor inconvenience.

    Literally Mindblown

COME OVER HERE!This place is a literal dream for dog owners and dogs! Our dogs enjoyed the exploration and swimming. There should be more trashcans, I carried poo for more than half the circle around the pond! Very clean.

    Thanks!

Thank you for blogging and posting off leash areas! My young Aussie hikes everywhere with me off leash. We did state parks last year but only cause he was very young and stayed at my heel. He’s 14 months now so no more state parks off leash due to his love of food, against the rules, and he loves people. We travel all over New England searching out dog parks or off leash area. Vermont has quite a few awesome ones.

    Not a Dog Park

I share the love for this place with the other reviewers and take my German Shephard there often throughout the year. One important fact to remember is that this park is owned by the Land and Garden Trust who graciously have continued the Rockefeller's permission for off leash use. Off leash use is not a given, it's a gift and not everyone connected with the Trust shares the desire to continue it. Dog poop, whether in a bag left on the road or worse unbagged, as well as out of control dogs jeapardize it's use for all of us.

Great place to allow the pups a swim!

Although the weather turned rainy while we visited, this was an excellent place that our dogs utterly LOVED. There are multiple lake access points and fields as well as well maintained trails. Our dogs had ab absolute blast swimming, running, and exploring the area. Know that there is no fencing, so your dog must be controlled off leash in order to be safe. However, if your pups are well-behaved and have an excellent recall, they'll have a great time!

Greatest place on earth for my furry friend

This is an amazing facility, you could hike on trails through the mountains, walk on carriage roads and of cause a lake for your little guys to swim. Thank you for such wonderful place.

    Such a relief

I have a highly active dog that needs to run free or he's just a ball of energy. Bar harbor is a very busy place, so it was nice to find this dog park to let the dogs run around.

    little long pond

We explored the lower pond area with our newborn son and 2 dogs while on our first family vacation in Acadia National Park... this place was the ultimate relief for all of us... stroller friendly trails with the freedom to allow our dogs to be their normal selves off leash in the wild... being residents of the Adirondacks this felt like a home away from home to us and would definitely come back again

Nice Dog Area But Be Vigilant

Nice dog park with a pond with crystal clear water where our pup was able to swim. Unfortunately, our pup got bitten by a pit-bull and the pit-bull owner was careless.

    This is a must!

We have been coming to Maine for the last 6 years and last year we had 1 dog this year we have 2 and found this gem near the end of our stay. Very well maintained, very beautiful park. Large enough to wear or two out and anyone who had or has ever had a lab puppy knows how hard that is. Everyone we met there was super friendly and understanding of our overly excited to meet you little girl as well. A definite place will be returning too.

    Great place to swim

This place is great. Right at the beginning was a nice access to the pond. We visited in early September and water still looked ok for swimming. It is about 4 mile loop around the lake, I was told by a local. My pup enjoyed the water and romping off leash. Parking was along the road.

    Great off leash location.

There are two places to park to get here. One is on RT.3 and the other is just up the street in the upper parking lot. We started from the street location. We kept on the main Carriage path and stayed to the left. There were signs leading back to the pond but we continued on heading towards the upper lot, once we reached the lot area we took Friends path back down to where we parked on the road. Once we we're far enough from the street we let our Lab off leash. Everyone we ran into was friendly as we're their dogs.

    Best Place Ever

First... let me just say thank you for allowing us to enjoy this beautiful spot!!!! I'm not sure who loves it more, my husband or our dogs!!! We go as often as we can....and always leave happy! Even if we didn't have dogs, I think we would still go there!!!

    Nice, but ...

It is amazing to have such a place to be able to have dogs off leash. Thanks to the Rockefellers who made this possible. Acadia is very dog friendly, but we know our furry kids like freedom. This place offers it. My husband and I only experienced well behaved owners and dogs. However, with any leash free area you have to be proactive. There are a few options for paths and walking distances. I wish there were some waste baskets in another place other than the entrance, but that's the life a dog owner...carrier of poo. The pond...not sure if it was not appealing due to the season, but it was hard to find areas dogs could go on without coming out like mud pits. Also, the obvious presence of leaches freaked me out. The water was also extremely stagnant. Not good. We are used to our dog swimming in natural areas, but this one made us nervous.

    Beauty of nature, great trails

One of my top three dog parks. Privately owned but open to public use. Fully leash free. Natural wooded trails.very well maintained. We hiked the Friends trail. It went through the woods to a carriage trail, to a meadow by the pond, and along the pond on boardwalks. The dogs and humans were exhausted and happy.

    Dog Heaven

There's no other way to describe this place... it's dog heaven. There are hiking trails, huge meadows to run in, a nice big pond for a swim, it's perfection. The best part is, everyone who we crossed paths with in August of 2015 was so friendly. I hope that everyone who visits treats this place with respect, because it's a wonderful gift to dog owners.

    Great Find!

My Cardigan Corgi, Amelia, and I went to explore this area for the first time today. We hike Acadia often, but this was our best hike yet! The carriage trails are well-maintained, the swimming was great, and the other people and dogs were wonderful as well. The only downside is if your dog doesn't do well on voice commands only you may want to wait til you get down to the trails to let them loose. The area by the entrance is not fenced so only bushes separate it from the road.

Wonderful area for dogs & their owners

We took our 2 Samoyeds to Little Long Pond every day we were in the Acadia area. The dogs were in heaven. Fresh water lakes & streams to jump in. Fields & trails to follow. Lots of wonderful dogs and their owners to meet & play with. Want to thank the Rockefeller family for permitting our dogs & us to walk your beautiful property.

    good citizenship

I just have to say that, sadly, after years of year-round use, I now rarely go to this location during the summer. I believe its may be being loved to death. Yes, dogs meeting other dogs is a great thing. Most other dogs and owners are great, but, unfortunately, in the summer there are now at times too many dogs whose owners feel it's fine for their dog to charge you and yours, and not always with totally benign intentions. You may think it's harmless fun, but no decent dog trainer is going to tell you it's OK for your dog to do that.
Please, clean up after your dog and respect other dogs, their owners and those who provide this truly special resource. As a year round resident I sure don't want to lose the right to use this land for a leash-free walk other times of the year. However, it's my understanding and concern that the property owners may be becoming increasingly frustrated by some of these problems, including dog fights, which, apparently and inexplicably they sometimes are blamed for.
(Oh, and I shouldn't have to say this, but "clean up" does NOT mean leaving your dog's waste along side the road in a plastic bag. For the life of me I don't understand it, but It happens a LOT in the summer. Please, just don't do it.)
    Thanks for hearing my concerns.

    Thank you to the Rockefellers

This truly is a gift to all dog owners and dogs. What a beautiful area to frolic around. Met some really nice people and dogs and was very picturesque.

    Mario and Luigi LOVED IT

our two Chihuahuas ran around like they were puppies again and made some new friends while we were here. While I usually don't let my boys off their leashes (we live in suburban NJ.. cars and other dangers) I felt comfortable enough to let my boys off their leashes here. Great place to let them run and play off their cabin fever of the hotel room and the car !

    Puppy Heaven

Privately owner by the Rockefeller family there are literally hundreds of acres of fields, carriage roads and hiking trails. I bring my Lab/Pit MIx Kaiser at least once a week and its his favorite place in the whole world. All of the dogs and their people are friendly and its not unusual to have a dozen or so dogs all playing together as we walk the 4.5 mile loop around the park.
