BringFido's Guide to the Hawaiian Islands

Posted by Billy Francis

Bring your canine ohana to the 50th state! From the Big Island to the ancient Kure Atoll, the Hawaiian Islands stretch across 1,500 miles of the Pacific Ocean, and with so many things to see and do, Hawaiian Airlines makes it easy to island hop with your hound. Spend your days sniffing out tropical adventures and dining on the freshest catch, and at night, cuddle up in a boutique hotel or an oceanfront home on a visit to the dog-friendly Hawaiian Islands.

Things to Do

“If I fall in, I’m using you as a floaty.” Photo by SUPDog Hawaii

Take Fido paddleboarding on deep blue water, hike together through mystical surroundings and trot across dog-friendly green sand beaches in The Aloha State.

Paddle with your Pooch

Be sure to yell out “‘Sup dog!” to every canine who floats by on your guided paddleboard adventure with SUPDog Hawaii in Honolulu. This dog-centric company will teach you and your doggie paddler how to SUP on the Pacific Ocean. If your pooch would rather stay on dry land, you can enjoy a paddleboard adventure with local rescue dogs instead.

Visitors to the island of Kauai can get buoyant with their good boy in a kayak rental from Kayak Kauai. And on Hawaii Island, paddle in a kayak or paddleboard rental from Alii Adventures.

Natural Wonders of Hawaii

From Jurassic Park to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hawaii provides the epic backdrop for some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. You and your pooch will feel like you’re surrounded by CGI when you tour the Hawaiian Islands’ natural wonders. Waimea Canyon State Park, also known as The Grand Canyon of the Pacific, on the island of Kauai, is a sublime sight to behold. Cruise with your canine along Waimea Canyon Drive and stop to take in the view at Waimea Canyon Lookout or at Puʻu Hinahina Lookout. Then, leave the car behind and go for a short stroll along Cliff Trail to catch more epic views of the canyon.

Outbound hounds on the island of Maui can embark on the moderate Nakalele Blowhole Trail to see the natural geyser that spews seawater high into the air from an underwater lava tube. Or, for a strenuous hike on the island of Oahu, head out on the Kolekole Trail to enjoy panoramic views of the tropical rainforest.

Surf’s Pup

Pups who graduate from paddleboarding can try surfing, an even more gnarly watersport in the state where this “sport of kings” really took off. Join Rocky Canon and Hawaii Surf Dogs to carve the waves off the coast of Oahu at Turtle Bay Resort. Bring your pooch along or hop on a board with Hina or Kahuna, both experienced canine surfers who can show you the ropes.

Mutts on Maui can hang ten with Maui Surfer Girls instead. This female-owned company aims to keep the surfing traditions of The Aloha State alive by teaching people and pups how to become one with the water.

Green and Golden Sand

Bring your big dog to the Big Island’s most unique beach. Papakōlea Green Sand Beach is one of the few places in the world with green sand thanks to olivine crystals formed by lava. Leashed pups and their owners should leave early in the day to beat the heat on the moderate out-and-back trail that leads to this incredible oddity.

People and pups searching for a sandy spot in Maui instead can go beach hopping across three gorgeous stretches of sand at Kamaole Beach Park.

Paws for a Cause

Hang out with Hawaii’s rescue pup community at an awesome dog park, and if Fido befriends a shelter dog while he’s there, inquire about taking her out for an adventure! Animal Community Center's Central Bark Park on the Big Island is a lush green space divided into separate sections for small and large dogs and is operated by the Hawaii Island Humane Society. Across the island, Mōʻiliʻili Dog Park is next to the humane society’s headquarters and features both grass and shady spots for pups to get a break from the sun.

If you’re spending time on Kauai, visit the Kauai Humane Society’s, on-site dog park where your pooch will have a picturesque place with ample room to roam.

Sail Away, Sail Away

Salty sea dogs who prefer somebody else leading the way may choose a day cruise over a surf lesson. Indigo Ocean Hawaii is a dog-friendly ecotour agency based in Honolulu. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their owners for a private cruise on a 40-passenger catamaran with a chance to see dolphins, sea turtles, tropical fish, and rare sea creatures during a 3-hour tour.

Pink Sails Waikiki is an Oahu tour company that welcomes pups on board to search for whales or the perfect place to see a Pacific sunset. Fido can even chill on the boat with the crew while you enjoy snorkeling.

Bask in the beauty of the Big Island at this beautiful house on the ocean in Hilo. Wake up with coffee and banana pancakes on the porch while you soak up the ocean views in the distance. Then, get out on the water to practice Fido’s newfound skills on the complimentary paddleboard, kayak or boogie board. This relaxing off-grid Airbnb utilizes solar power and rain catchment and is surrounded by fruit trees, bamboo and rainbow eucalyptus. The farm grows ingredients for a variety of natural products used in its on-site holistic courses. Gorgeous Garden Escape

Situated in Wainiha River Valley, this romantic garden cottage is on a bluff overlooking a taro farm with mountains in the distance. Fido will love roaming around the large yard which feels like a pet-friendly botanical garden. Amble with your Alsatian down to the private stream for a refreshing dip together or stay at the house and enjoy a plunge in the balcony pool surrounded by tropical trees.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants

Treat your Beagle to Bibimbap, dine together by the ocean and enjoy the “pawfect” pie on a culinary tour of Paradise.

Drinks and a Dog Menu

If you love spending a sunny afternoon in the beer garden with your best friends, dash with your dog to Aloha Beer Company. This popular brewpub is a firm favorite among the canine community in Honolulu who come for the pets and stay for the mouthwatering dog menu. Fido can fill up on a small plate of “Puppy Chikkin” or go big with a “Bibimpup,” containing diced veggies, a sprinkle of bacon and topped with egg yolk. Don’t forget to buy the bowl to commemorate your visit and order your companion a pupsicle for dessert.

Eat More, Sleep Less

After a morning trek on the Sleeping Giant Trail, call in at the Sleeping Giant Grill. This popular post-hike eatery invites tired Terriers to chill out at a shady table under an umbrella while humans order a plate of fresh ahi tuna, a popular local delicacy, or a plate of delicious fish tacos. When you’re finished eating from the ocean, get out on the water in a kayak rental from nearby Scotty's Surf Co. Kauai.

In Love with Lava

Start your day the right way at Island Lava Java, where you can order a cup of joe and enjoy it with ocean views on the pet-friendly patio. While pups lap up a refreshing bowl of water, you can order one of the cafe’s famous cinnamon rolls or pull-a-parts made fresh every day. For something more substantial, stick around and order a burger for lunch and ask your server for a saltless patty for Fido to enjoy.

Sit and Sip

Live music provides the soundtrack on the pet-friendly patio at Moku Kitchen in Honolulu. This bright restaurant is the ideal place to fill up after a private catamaran tour with Indigo Ocean Hawaii. Utilizing local and organic ingredients, the menu includes plates to share like garlic truffle oil fries and coconut corn chowder. Wash it down with a Moku libation like the Monkeypod Mai Tai or Lucha Libre.

Hug Your Hound at Huggo’s

No trip to Hawaii would be complete without enjoying a fresh poke bowl in the sun with the sound of the ocean waves lapping the shore in the background. Huggo's On The Rocks is a dog-friendly restaurant with a view in Kailua-Kona that serves delicious poke bowls and more. The entire lounge is outdoors, which means pups are welcome at any covered waterfront table. Bring your furry best friend along for lunch, dinner or sunset cocktails.

“Woof-Fired” Pizza

For a laidback dinner from a local favorite, head to Outrigger Pizza Company in Kihei. During the week, this wood-fired pizza van is parked at Kukui Mall with picnic tables on the grass where you can enjoy a fresh pie. Whether you want to keep it simple with a Three Cheese Pizza or go for an exotic Lilikoi Pork, there’s a reason Outrigger is hailed as “the best pizza in Hawaii.”
